Birds get lucky after prolonged lack of sleep

If people miss just one night’s sleep, we feel groggy and lose motivation. We can easily fall asleep whilst driving.

But some birds can go for up to 19 days without sleep, and sleep deprived male birds in some species tend to sire the most young.

I interviewed Dr John Lesku (Zoologist, La Trobe University), who is investigating the sleep patterns in birds to hopefully shed light on the many mysteries which remain regarding human sleep.

You can listen to the interview now on the ABC RN The Science Show website.
